I just realized that I haven’t written a post about our newest addition to the family! It’s been 7 months since we brought him home and we really can’t imagine life without him now.
Back in November we made the decision to adopt an animal from The Winnipeg Humaine Society. We’ve talked about having a dog for a while and just felt like it was a good time to do just that. At the time, the WHS was having an adoption event at all the Pet Smarts in the city. They do it every 2-3 months where they bring in a few animals to the store locations and people can adopt animals right there! We went to 2 Pet Smart locations and the WHS before meeting our fur baby. We wanted a dog that would grow with our boys so we thought a puppy would be the best fit for us. Just as we were about to call it a day, we decided to make one more trip to one last location. As soon as we walked in to the store, there he was 🙂 He was in a closed play yard running and hopping around. He was truly the cutest little thing!!! I just knew we had to take him home. There were a few other families there who looked interested in adopting him which worried me a little. I didn’t want to risk the chance of not being able to bring him home so right then and there we decided to adopt him!
The adoption process was quick and easy. Workers from WHS took care of all the documents and fees and the employees at Pet Smart helped us find all the necessities we needed for bringing home puppy. Along with the excitement of bringing home our puppy, there was also a sense of worry and fear. This was our first time owning a pet. We didn’t know what dog food to get, what crate size to buy, the expenses we’d run into so we were very grateful for all the help from everyone who took part in the adoption.
As soon as we brought him home we let him get used to his new surroundings. He had so much energy and was constantly running into furniture it was actually super adorable! The first few weeks were the most challenging especially with the house training. But after about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, he was fully house trained. Bringing home a puppy really is like bringing home a newborn baby. They obviously grow much quicker but they have feeding schedules, they wake up in the middle of the night and they need a lot of TLC. I can’t emphasize enough how patience plays a big role in training your dog. From character building to teaching good behaviour, patience IS key.
Here’s a little info and photos of our boy BARNES
Barnes is now a 7 1/2 month old Labrador retriever mix who was born in the Shamattawa First Nation, Manitoba on September 14, 2015. He was one of two stray puppies surrendered to the WHS just over a month after he was born. The photo below was taken a day after we brought him home. My heart melts each time I look at this photo!
When I found out where he was from I remembered reading an article about the dogs in Shamattawa. Sadly, the dog population there is still out of control. Packs of stray dogs can be found walking around the community in search of food. Because of the over population of dogs, community members have resulted to “dog culling” which is when a number of community members go out and shoot the stray dogs as a way of population control. If they’re not shot, the dogs either die from starvation, or freeze to death during the cold winter season. Before we even found out about Barnes’ background we already wanted him but after hearing about what life he could’ve had we wanted to love him even more. This is the main reason why we wanted to adopt through the WHS. We wanted to be part of the change in one animal’s life. Thanks to the Winnipeg Humaine Society we’re able to give Barnes his forever home & family.
Barnes is still a growing pup who loves going to doggy day care every Sunday. He loves belly rubs and cuddling on the reclining chair. He’s almost mastered walks (he used to bark at everyone and everything he passed) and he really really enjoys playing fetch. He’s great with our boys and we’re just so proud of how far he’s come along!
Thanks for reading! I love reading about pet adoption stories, glad I finally shared mine! Please Adopt! Dont shop! I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday. 😊
